The Spirit of Discernment

Matthew 9:2–5 (AMP)

“[2] They brought to Him a man who was paralyzed, lying on a stretcher. Seeing their [active] faith [springing from confidence in Him], Jesus said to the paralytic, ‘Do not be afraid, son; your sins are forgiven [the penalty is paid, the guilt removed, and you are declared to be in right standing with God].’ [Mark 2:3–12; Luke 5:18–26]

[3] And some of the scribes said to themselves, ‘This man blasphemes [by claiming the rights and prerogatives of God]!’

[4] But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, ‘Why do you think evil in your hearts?

[5] For which is easier, to say, “Your sins are forgiven and the penalty paid,” or to say, “Get up and walk”? [Both are possible for God; both are impossible for man.]’”

Every Christian has been given the spirit of discernment. It’s the divine ability to recognize information, interactions, and situations without being told or physically present.

It’s closely related to intuition — the inner senses of the spirit. However, while the spirit of discernment operates through intuition, they are not the same.

The gift of prophecy often works hand in hand with the spirit of discernment. Through this ministry, you can see, know, and hear things beyond the physical realm. It makes you spiritually aware and alert at all times.

Walking in Discernment

It’s one thing to be given a gift, another to receive it — and yet another to use it.

So, how do you walk in discernment?

Discernment is a ministry of the Holy Spirit in your life. You minister to the Lord, and He ministers to you. To allow the Holy Spirit to minister to you, your heart must remain open.

---

1. Be Filled with the Spirit

Pray. Meditate. Fast. Worship. Study faith-inspiring Christian devotionals and materials.

A consistent spiritual life keeps your heart tender and your senses sharpened to recognize the voice of the Spirit.

---

2. Trust the Voice of Your Spirit

Your spirit is the candle of the Lord.

The difference between intuition and discernment is that discernment carries no doubt. It is certain. However, ignoring the messages, warnings, or instructions brought to you weakens the fluency of this ministry in your life.

Example:

You might be warned about certain people in your life; that they carry a mission to destroy or weaken you, but you ignore the warning. Soon, you may become blind to the activities of darkness around you because you silenced the ministry of discernment within you.

---

3. Learn the Power of Silence

You may not always have thoughts running through your mind, but still — be quiet.

Learn to withdraw and be still before the Lord. Many times, angels have reports or instructions from heaven, but you’re too busy to receive them.

The lighter and calmer your spirit, the easier divine information flows within you.

---

4. Stay Prayerful

Discernment and prayer go hand in hand.

Remember, there are different types of prayer: intercessory prayer, prayer of thanksgiving, prayer of praise, prayer of adoration, and prayer of supplication.

These spiritual exercises open your heart and give the spirit of discernment greater footing in your life.

---

Activating the Gift

If you feel the ministry of discernment has become dormant in your life, it’s time to activate it.

Declare it with faith:

> “I have the spirit of discernment.”

“Father, in the name of Jesus, I have the spirit of discernment.”

“I am, at all times, informed and aware of all things.”

“Nothing escapes me.”

---

May this ministry of the Spirit become active and dominant in your life, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Shalom.
