More Than a Title: The Emotional and Physical Cost of Leadership
I find it rather disturbing: the fact that a lot of leaders die young. Not young per se, but not old either. Religious leaders seem to lead this trend, with political leaders at the rear.
There lived many years ago a faith-filled, charismatic, and virtuous spiritual leader. She was an American.
Her name was Kathryn Kuhlman. She was the founder of Kathryn Kuhlman Ministries, which entailed faith healing, preaching, and the Kathryn Kuhlman Foundation.
Born on the 9th of May, 1907, she died on the 20th of February, 1976. Official records estimate that she was 68 years old. What caused her demise? She had a heart condition.
Other leaders follow, and the causes of their demise were similar.
Archbishop Benson Idahosa.
He was a Nigerian Faith Preacher, and the founder of the Church of God Mission, with its headquarters in Benin City, Nigeria.
He was born on the 11th of September, 1938, and he died on the 12th of March, 1998.
He died of cardiac arrest at the age of 60.
There was Martin Luther, a German priest.
He was an author, theologian, and professor. He exposed the Church’s corrupt purgatory doctrine. In his day, this doctrine taught that one had to give every penny to secure a good place in heaven, and that those who gave little or nothing had no place in the Kingdom but would rather go to hell. Thus, believers were sold purgatory.
Martin Luther, who spent his time translating the Bible from Greek into German, discovered that salvation was not by works, but by faith and grace. His newfound conviction did not remain confined to his mind: he was vocal about it.
He was born on the 10th of November, 1483, and he died on the 18th of February, 1546.
He died of cardiac infarction at an estimated age of 62.
Several leaders pass on, and their causes of death remain undisclosed to the public.
Leaders carry so much pain in their hearts. A lot of faith ministers are sick. They have heart conditions, they just won’t tell you. They show up wearing glamour and grace, but behind the robe and garment is a man or woman of many sorrows, bearing the loads and burdens of millions. Oh! It takes a few to really see through the façade.
The least we can do for them is make them happy and not be an extra source of worry or pain; even if being around them stings. Even when we are hurt, the rightful sacrifice is to never show it, so they don’t carry extra burdens. It is a heavy burden to bear, and a little token of appreciation for the sacrificial lives they have lived.
Not only leaders, but notable stars and celebrities who also dedicate their time, energy, and resources to beautifying the world.
We have the likes of Michael Jackson, the King of Pop music.
He was born on August 29, 1958, and he died on June 25, 2009. He was just 50 years old. For some, at that age, they are only arriving at the beginning of self-discovery.
Michael started in the church and drifted off in pursuit of fame. He did not have a firm conviction while in service as to why he did what he did in the church, so it was easy to recreate a purpose. He committed his heart and soul to his purpose and never found balance.
It is an open secret that Michael was murdered and framed with an overdose. That aside, his personal physician admitted that the pop singer—who inspired many, brought happiness to many, and was a role model to many—suffered cardiac arrest.
They say, “Heavy is the head that wears the crown.”
The stars that awe us the most are shooting stars. They run across the sky in seconds, leaving lasting imprints in our memories. Sometimes wishes are made according to folklore; sometimes we marvel at God’s creation. But humans are just like the stars we see.
And, the brightest stars burn the fastest.
Sometimes we sacrifice our bodies to noble causes so much that we forget what it feels like to be loved, and to love. To be genuinely cared for and taken care of. We forget what it means to truly be happy, as we are satisfied with the sense of achievement we get from chasing our dreams and goals. To be honest, there is more. There is more to life. One can experience ecstasy and still be fulfilled. It is all in the balance of life.
This ecstasy can be found in the midst of one’s kinsmen, loved ones, comrades, and even those we consider ordinary.
You can find happiness on the streets by giving to the needy—by sending young children back to school, by clothing the ragged, by feeding the hungry. Though momentary, those moments are beneficial to one’s health. Sometimes happiness is found in the arms of a parent, the bosom of a spouse, or the company of a sibling.
Our leaders will live long, amen. They will witness the coming of the Lord, and there will be no more sudden deaths. With our faith joined with theirs, they will overcome, they will be happy, and they will have holistic health.
We seal this decree in the name of the Lord Jesus.
And the church says?
Amen.
