Prologue (pg3)
We are required to serve in every aspect of our lives. The Lord Jesus first taught that the greatest among us is the one who serves others. Later, He demonstrated this by washing His disciples’ feet. He then said, “As I have loved you, so must you love one another. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.”
Love itself is an act of service. True love is about giving, doing, and enduring with patience—hence the saying, “Love is patient.” Love is expressed in service.
Jesus calls us to lay down our lives for one another—not necessarily by physically dying, but by living selflessly and sacrificially. He commands us to love the brethren sincerely as we love ourselves—by clothing them, feeding them, and praying for them.
1 Peter 5:5 (KJV)
“Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.”
Humility is the heart of service. It is the readiness to serve. It’s not merely about bowing before elders or speaking politely, nor is pride merely about refusing to greet. Pride and humility are matters of the heart.
Refusing to submit to ungodly or unjust leadership is not pride, yet pride can manifest in resisting rightful authority. Humility, on the other hand, is the willingness to serve and submit without unnecessary resistance—provided it is in line with truth and righteousness. It is both simple and deeply profound.
