Chapter III - Service To Your Home And Parents

" Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.

2. Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise)

3. That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth."

Ephesians 6:1–3 (KJV)

As a child, you owe it to your parents: to serve, obey, and honour them. Often, their will and opinions may differ from yours, but let their will be done in righteousness. If what they ask is ungodly, resist it firmly, so that the will of the Most High prevails.

For instance, your mother may say, “Wrap this in that polythene bag.” You might feel it is not the best option and may want to argue. Don’t. Instead, while obeying, you can politely suggest, “Mummy, this isn’t very nice; can we use a leather bag instead?” If she agrees, fine; replace it. If not, do not argue. Apply this principle in all areas of life.

However, if your father were to advise you to go to sinful lengths— perhaps in moments of barrenness or desperation—you must strongly resist and withdraw. Evil company corrupts good manners (1 Corinthians 15:33). If you remain close, you may gradually learn and adopt ungodly ways.
