The Anointing of Leadership: Why Kings Were Anointed

1 Samuel 16:12–13 (KJV)

And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the LORD said, Arise, anoint him: for this is he.

Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward…”

When the prophet Samuel anointed David in Books of Samuel, it was not just a symbolic ritual. It was a divine endorsement. A heavenly selection. A spiritual empowerment.

Have you ever wondered why kings in Scripture were ceremonially anointed?

It was more than tradition. More than coronation. More than public recognition.

It was about capacity.

Leadership Requires Divine Enablement

Leadership is not sustained by charisma alone. It takes more than intelligence, strategy, or ambition. True rulership requires divine empowerment.

When David was anointed, the Spirit of the Lord came upon him from that day forward. The oil was visible—but the Spirit was the real empowerment.

The Spirit of rulership:

Gives you initiative.

Grants authority.

Establishes order.

Releases wisdom.

Produces influence.

Through godly leadership, legality is established and stability is built.

When Leaders Lack Divine Wisdom

Many institutions suffer today because individuals occupy positions they were never spiritually prepared for. They force their way into power but lack the wisdom to sustain it.

And when wisdom is absent, confusion fills the space.

Scripture reminds us in Book of Proverbs:

By wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established; by knowledge the rooms are filled with all precious and pleasant riches.” (Proverbs 24:3–4, ESV)

Wisdom builds.

Understanding establishes.

Knowledge fills.

Without these, leadership collapses.

The Key: Ask for Wisdom

The good news? Wisdom is not reserved for a select few.

In Epistle of James, we are told:

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.” (James 1:5, ESV)

If God has called you to lead—in your home, your ministry, your workplace, or your community—ask Him for wisdom.

Ask for:

Wisdom to conduct yourself rightly,

Wisdom to lead with integrity,

Wisdom to build what will last,

Wisdom to stand without faltering.

Speak It Into Your Life

Faith becomes effectual when you declare truth boldly.

Say:

I reign and rule wisely.”

“I am anointed with the Spirit of leadership to lead in prudence and justice.”

Leadership is not about domination. It is about stewardship. It is not about control—it is about responsibility under God.

A Prayer for You

May God anoint you daily with wisdom.

May you lead with clarity, courage, and righteousness.

May every circumstance bow to the grace upon your life.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

God bless you.

Shalom.
